ROAD TRANSPORTATION TELEMATICS


GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE

Based on the desire to accommodate this increasing demand for transport and mobility in a sustainable and an economically viable way, transportation telematics supported by information technology have emerged. Hence, it is indispensible for transportation professionals and city planners to be aware of existing intelligent transportation technologies and their potential. In this course, the student obtains an overview of services and technologies known also as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Topics such as traffic detectors, travel and traffic information, public transportation management, fleet & freight management, demand management, road and road traffic management, and cooperative driving are introduced and discussed. Focus is on road traffic and transport. Afterwards, more in depth study of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) follows. As a result, the student will be able to understand the potentials, challenges and limitations of information and automation technologies in Transportation Engineering practise.
